Things to consider before starting your Animation Project
Usually as animators, when we want to start an animation project, we get tempted to dive right in and start working them frame by frame in hand or in the software. But that definitely does not end well. We might get stuck, get slowed down, go off track, and basically turn the animation project into a tragedy. To avoid this, in this article, we are going to focus on what all things we should take under consideration before starting your animation project.
Before that,
What is animation?
Animation is basically bringing alive inanimate characters by designing, drawing photographic sequences to create an illusion of movement in a sequence. Our eyes retain an image for approximately 1/10 of a second, so when multiple images appear in fast series, our brain interprets it as one moving image.
This is a very practical medium as:
- It is engaging and relatable: people tend to see themselves in the characters being presented in an uncomplicated and clear form.
- It is feasible: animation can be produced at a very reasonable price and does not require special, costly facilities. There are many online and offline classes to deliver expert teachings in animation.

Draw a story
Before starting to put your talents into action, write the story. Just how Rapunzel has her story as a kidnapped girl with magic hair, your character needs a well-defined story too.
As discussed in the intro, we can sometimes be impatient, especially as beginners. But the story is very important for a perfect project to be sculpted.
After writing the story, define the characters. Have a detailed description of all the characters. Draw them in several ways. Draw some close up shots, full body shots, being happy, sad, tired or disgusted, different outfits and doing different activities.
Along with the characters, include objects too. These will later be very useful during the process. Constitute character sheets. Doing these can have a huge impact later in the continuity and flawlessness of the project
Plan your scenes
A movie or your project is going to be a combination of many scenes. It is crucial to stitch all the scenes to create a complete animated movie. Trying to work these out without a strategic routine, and only imagination can work out for one scene. When animating an entire movie, planning ahead is very much necessary.
Animators often fail to connect multiple scenes flawlessly. This is because of the lack of planning. It is vital to decide every scene’s requirements and attach them all to a connected plot. Plan how and where a scene starts and ends. This can avoid lots of mistakes and continuity.
Have a strategy
Once you are ready with your base story and scenes, start planning each and every stage of your project. This is the basic foundation of your entire accomplishment. Analyse what exactly are your needs. Write a step by step procedure of how you are going to proceed and complete the project.
If required, plan even till the timeline and schedule to have a perfect execution of the routine. As beginners, creating a workflow and following it can be very effective, especially if you are working for someone else, and you have a deadline.
